Gifted and talented programs

Various extension programs are offered to the students at Toukley Public School.

This year teachers with specialised skills or interests will be conducting programs in the areas of English and Mathematics through GATS Groups, debating, public speaking, robotics and dance.

Gifted and Talented Groups

A selection of students from Stages 2 and 3 are assessed and choosen to work with our talented Miss Leersnyder once a week. This class will provide educational opportunities that enrich and extend gifted and talented students, fostering a lifelong love of learning. This is based on Gagne's Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent which proposes that ‘the child progresses from giftedness (high potential) to talent (high performance) through the learning process, assisted by intra-personal and environmental factors. That is, gifts are innate abilities and talents are systematically developed skills.'

Public speaking

A selection of students from Stages 2 and 3 will be chosen to represent Toukley Public School in Public Speaking. The speakers will participate in a variety of public speaking competitions including the Premiers Multicultural Public Speaking Competition and the local public schools competition.

Technology (Robotics)

Each week selected students from Stages 1, 2 and 3 will be given the opportunity to work with our amazing range of robotics (EV3, Make Blocks, Spheros and Bee bots) Students develop their understanding of coding through completing selected challenges that their robots have to complete.

Dance

Toukley offers a variety dance groups across all stages.

2020 Dance Groups

Stage 2 Dance Group

Stage 3 Dance Group

Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 Ballet Group

Stage 2/3 Cheerleading Group

Stage 2/3 Hip Hop Group

These girls and boys create a theme for their dance, choreograph individual and group movements and design costumes for their performance.

The dance groups meet 1 lunch time per week, where these girls/ boys choreograph, practice and perform the dance they have created. It is hoped the dances will be selected for performance at the Central Coast Dance Festival.

Debating

Toukley Public School is an active participant in the Premiers Debating Challenge.

Selected students from Stage 2 and 3 plan and practice arguments and rebuttals against each other in preparation for competition. Students are given instruction and feedback from Miss Barnes on their skills in the GATs debating sessions.

In 2010 our school team were a convincing and argumentative team. They were lucky enough to make the semi finals when they were narrowly defeated by an experienced debating school.
